Both parties need to build a relationship and mutual trust to make the feedback meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, managers have delivered feedback infrequently, usually during formal performance appraisals. \u201cA performance review is just one potential place to give feedback,\u201d Bower said. \u201cIf you\u2019re saving feedback for the performance review, you&#8217;re not going to achieve the goal of getting somebody to change.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waiting too long separates the feedback from what you\u2019re seeing, and that detachment dilutes your impact. But speaking up too early can be detrimental, too. \u201cIf you want people to change, then give them feedback when they&#8217;re going to most likely be open to it,\u201d Bower said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timing also matters when feedback is emotionally charged, as people are more likely to be closed off and defensive, Collins said. Finding the right time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/continuous-feedback\/\">offer feedback as part of a continuous conversation<\/a> can help minimize emotional impact. Instead of addressing an issue in the moment, when the team member may feel most vulnerable, consider giving them space. Then, bring it up when the employee is more open to hearing feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-recommended-content-Z18Ykcw align  wp-block-lazyblock-recommended-content\"><div class=\"recommended-read-notice\">Recommended content<\/div> \n        <div class=\"recommended-read-box\">\n            <div class=\"recommended-read-image\" style=\"display:inherit;\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/EmployeesGuideFeedback-Thumb-800x800-1.png\" alt=\"\">\n            <\/div>          \n            <div class=\"recommended-read-text\">\n              <div class=\"\" style=\"margin-top:px;font-size:px;\"><h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/the-employees-ultimate-field-guide-to-giving-and-receiving-feedback\/\">Get the feedback formula<\/a><\/h2><\/div>\n                \n            <\/div>\n        <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-frame-feedback-as-a-benefit\">Frame feedback as a benefit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How managers present feedback makes a big difference in how employees react. \u201cIf you can frame feedback as something that&#8217;s going to help them get what they want, all of a sudden it becomes less anxiety-provoking and more helpful,\u201d Bower said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One tip for engaging employees is to ask for permission, she said, because just \u201cgetting it off your chest\u201d makes it about you, not them. By asking for permission, managers give team members the choice to receive feedback, which also frames the critique as helpful guidance rather than a mandatory task for the manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees will take feedback better, too, when they have a strong relationship with their managers. When managers understand their employees\u2019 career goals, they can tailor feedback to promote development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s] all about helping people understand how what you&#8217;re telling them can help them reach the goals that they have or their career aspirations,\u201d Bower said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting to this point requires preparation. Managers need to give feedback with care and purpose. \u201cFeedback is not something that is given without a lot of thought in advance,\u201d Bower said. Help managers conduct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/employee-feedback-examples-for-improving-team-performance\/\">better feedback conversations<\/a> by learning how to connect current performance to future potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/June-Bower-Webinar-Recap-Internal-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"Good feedback has these seven qualities.\" class=\"wp-image-100369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/June-Bower-Webinar-Recap-Internal-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/June-Bower-Webinar-Recap-Internal-980x555.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/June-Bower-Webinar-Recap-Internal-480x272.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-empower-people-to-choose-how-they-respond\">Empower people to choose how they respond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Feedback should be empowering and give people choices. But too often, feedback from a manager or other authority figure leaves employees feeling powerless to respond. Instead of empowering, the feedback comes across as judgmental and dictating the employee\u2019s next actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That lack of control can affect how employees react to feedback, Bower said. Without a sense of empowerment and autonomy, they\u2019re less likely to accept feedback and more likely to shut down and reject what they\u2019re hearing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managers giving feedback must emphasize that the advice they\u2019re offering is a suggestion based on the facts and their experience. From there, managers can encourage employees to talk through the situation, draw their own conclusions, and feel in control of the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees, meanwhile, can regain control by getting clarification wherever possible, Collins said. \u201cAsk follow-up questions on whatever feedback that you&#8217;re getting to say, \u2018Can you expand on what you mean?\u2019 or \u2018What was it you saw?\u2019\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more that employees can lean into the relationship with their manager, the more meaningful and effective feedback will be for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When feedback becomes an ongoing dialogue that\u2019s focused on reaching goals, managers and their reports reach a mutual understanding \u2014 and are ready to take employee
