Full stop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world has changed. People have changed. They want meaning and purpose. They want to be treated as the adults they are by the people they work for. They want flexibility, autonomy, respect, and fairness. But organizations are trapped in an old way of doing business. And force-fitting outdated approaches is like trying to jam the proverbial square peg into a round hole. So, what can HR leaders do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe actually need more from people, not less,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ryanestis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ryan Estis<\/a>, keynote speaker, leadership expert, and co-author of the upcoming book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Prepare-Impact-Principles-Human-Centered-Leadership\/dp\/1637556489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prepare for Impact<\/a>.\u201d \u201cBut the challenge is that we can\u2019t extract more, so it&#8217;s fundamentally requiring a shift in how we approach leadership, influence culture, and ultimately take care of our people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People today expect more from the workplace experience, says Ryan, who is speaking at the upcoming People Fundamentals webinar session<a href=\"https:\/\/betterworks.registration.goldcast.io\/events\/7511f39d-a422-4f27-b32d-525954411c01\"> \u201cHuman-Centered Leadership: Leading High-Performance Teams in a Forever Changed World.\u201d<\/a> Many people find their sense of purpose and accomplishment from doing their jobs, supporting their colleagues, and driving business results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWork can be a place where people feel valued, seen, heard, understood, and an opportunity to contribute more of themselves to something that matters,\u201d Ryan says. \u201cWe&#8217;re looking at work as a place to derive meaning in our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We talked with Ryan ahead of his People Fundamentals session to learn more about the importance of human-centered leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ryan-Estis-Were-Looking-at-Work-as-a-Place-to-Derive-Meaning-in-Our-Lives-Internal-1-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ryan-Estis-Were-Looking-at-Work-as-a-Place-to-Derive-Meaning-in-Our-Lives-Internal-1-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ryan-Estis-Were-Looking-at-Work-as-a-Place-to-Derive-Meaning-in-Our-Lives-Internal-1-980x555.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ryan-Estis-Were-Looking-at-Work-as-a-Place-to-Derive-Meaning-in-Our-Lives-Internal-1-480x272.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-build-momentum-through-harmony\">Build momentum through harmony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The old ways of working don\u2019t build momentum, Ryan says. Traditional work practices incentivize short-term results but not long-term growth because they don\u2019t account for the human factor. \u201cSustainable growth requires a long-term focus with an emphasis on better human experiences,\u201d Ryan says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Put people in a position to contribute their best\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/900616244?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To get long-term growth, you need engaged, fulfilled employees who have human-centered leaders to connect them to the organization\u2019s vision. When people find meaning and purpose in their work, they perform better. That\u2019s why \u201cyou have to prioritize people \u2014 their values, ideas, expressions, and their experiences \u2014 as most important to the long-term success of the business,\u201d Ryan says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ryan-Estis-Were-Looking-at-Work-as-a-Place-to-Derive-Meaning-in-Our-Lives-Internal-2-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ryan-Estis-Were-Looking-at-Work-as-a-Place-to-Derive-Meaning-in-Our-Lives-Internal-2-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ryan-Estis-Were-Looking-at-Work-as-a-Place-to-Derive-Meaning-in-Our-Lives-Internal-2-980x555.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Ryan-Estis-Were-Looking-at-Work-as-a-Place-to-Derive-Meaning-in-Our-Lives-Internal-2-480x272.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lead-from-the-inside-out\">Lead from the inside-out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To build this momentum at work, leaders at all levels need to start with themselves. \u201cLeaders who are willing to closely examine their strengths and weaknesses, understand their blind spots, and really commit to growth and change have the best opportunity to create impact and move an organization forward,\u201d Ryan says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By consistently modeling human-centered behaviors, leaders set the tone for a more fulfilling and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/meaningful-work-franny-oxford\/\">meaningful work<\/a> experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HR leaders can contribute to this culture shift, making it easier to embrace a people-first approach. \u201cThe HR function is uniquely well-positioned to contribute to this and really be a catalyst for moving some of these ideas, values, and elevated skills and competencies through the business,\u201d Ryan says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By training leaders on how to connect and communicate with their teams, you facilitate better manager-employee conversations about finding purpose at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-galvanize-human-centered-leaders\">Galvanize human-centered leaders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Developing human-centered leaders can transform how people approach their work. \u201cPart of the leader\u2019s job is to galvanize meaning, galvanize connection,\u201d Ryan says, \u201cand demonstrate to people that you have an opportunity to contribute to something that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Achieving this state isn\u2019t about any one person. It requires an intentional and strategic plan. Begin with the end in mind. Create clarity about where you\u2019re going and what you want your human-centered culture to look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, conduct a targeted gap analysis. Assess where you are today, and how that compares to your vision for the future state. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/how-to-measure-employee-satisfaction\/\">Employee satisfaction surveys<\/a>, for example, might reveal that employees don\u2019t feel valued for their contributions. HR leaders can respond to this feedback with remedies that also align with the business strategy. But they must take action. Simply gathering the survey data isn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internal communication and buy-in are critical for any strategic change, Ryan says, starting in the C-suite and cascading down to functional leaders. Consider HR\u2019s role as a consultant to the business. You advise business leaders on the necessary changes while helping them build those skills and competencies across the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By embracing change and purpose, you can transform your company culture into a catalyst for business growth. \u201cPurpose drives competitive advantage,\u201d Ryan says. \u201cPeople want to connect to something larger than themselves.\u201d Give your people what they need at work, and empower them to return that gift in improved engagement, productivity, and business results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about Ryan\u2019s prescription for a
