That\u2019s a topic that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tim-ringo-chartered-fcipd-90a0a56\/?originalSubdomain=uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tim Ringo<\/a> knows a lot about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a former senior executive at Accenture, IBM, and SAP, Tim has designed and led some of the largest and most successful HRIT and change programs in the world. Those experiences have given him unique insights into how HR technology can amplify productivity, which he explores in his book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Solving-Productivity-Puzzle-Individual-Performance\/dp\/1789664764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solving the Productivity Puzzle<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tim is serving as a keynote speaker at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/empower-hr-2024\/\">EmpowerHR Europe<\/a>. Ahead of that event, we asked for his advice on how HR leaders can strategically implement technology to amplify productivity and improve performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-embed-new-tools-in-your-strategy-and-workflow\">Embed new tools in your strategy and workflow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Assessing new tools and technology provides a chance to revisit your talent strategy at a high level. \u201cWho are we as an organization?\u201d Tim suggests asking yourself. \u201cWhat&#8217;s our operating model in terms of helping the organization achieve its goals?\u201d Consider what the business needs from people to accomplish its strategic plan. Then take a deeper look at your processes and where you can integrate technology to support the workforce in achieving those goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategic alignment is a crucial first step to any investment, but especially one as big as HR technology. \u201cToo often, people will go out and buy HR technologies and not really have a reason for doing that,\u201d Tim says. \u201cAnd then it ends up being an IT project versus an HR change project.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve aligned what you need from HR technology with where the business is going, consider the value HR technology can add to employees\u2019 day-to-day lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-engage-your-managers-in-conversations-about-performance-management\">Engage your managers in conversations about performance management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Upgrading your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/performance-management-process-tips\/\">performance management process<\/a> and adopting new tools can propel your workforce productivity to new heights. But any significant change is likely to be met with resistance \u2014 especially one that shifts the primary responsibility for performance management from HR to managers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tim emphasizes the importance of demonstrating how new performance management processes and technology benefit the people most affected by the change. \u201cWhenever I&#8217;ve been implementing HR technologies and new processes and operating models, I&#8217;ve always considered who&#8217;s the audience,\u201d he says. \u201cWho is going to be using this tool and benefiting most from it? And quite often it&#8217;s the managers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He recommends giving managers a chance to experiment with new tools and apply them in the flow of work before they commit to them. \u201cGive people the opportunity to sit down and play with the software and do some real scenarios,\u201d Tim says. \u201cWhen you answer the \u2018what&#8217;s in it for me\u2019 and then let them touch it in a day-in-the-life type of scenario, I see the change resistance melts away quite significantly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tap-into-employee-goals-and-motivation\">Tap into employee goals and motivation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking a business-centric approach to managing performance can stifle growth. Employees are key drivers of the business, and they contribute their best when their needs and interests are met. \u201cOrganizations are realizing that getting the right people in the right place, with the right skills at the right time, and \u2014 most importantly \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/how-to-motivate-employees\/\">the right motivation<\/a> is really, really powerful,\u201d Tim says, underscoring the significance of aligning individual and business goals to increase productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe great thing about HR technologies these days is they\u2019re profile-driven, which means they&#8217;re driven by, \u2018Who are you as an individual? What skills do you have? What experiences do you have?\u2019\u201d Tim says. This focus on individual profiles lets you tailor your workforce planning strategy, ensuring that employees are not only positioned in roles that suit their capabilities but also motivated to excel in their roles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee goals and motivation, coupled with the precision offered by profile-driven HR technologies, form a powerful combination.
