Start by instilling a daily habit of experimentation in your teams. One way to do this is by creating what Josh refers to as a \u201cto-test\u201d list that everyone can help build out. \u201cAnytime an idea pops in your head \u2014 big, small, weird, doesn&#8217;t matter \u2014 don&#8217;t judge it, don&#8217;t analyze it: Just stick it on the list,\u201d he said. \u201cThe mere existence of a \u2018to-test\u2019 list will boost your creativity.\u201d A shared list like this will keep innovation top of mind for your employees and allow them to build upon each other&#8217;s ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enacting the ideas on your \u201cto-test\u201d list promotes a culture of controlled risk-taking and experimentation. Employees need to know that it\u2019s okay to take a chance on a new idea, especially if they can test it in a safe environment. Run small, quick tests of new ideas cheaply and iteratively before scaling anything to neutralize the risk of trying new things. \u201cDon&#8217;t assume it&#8217;s not going to work,\u201d Josh said. \u201cWhy not just run the experiment? Give it a shot. Take a lesson from innovator Fiona Fairhurst, who was tasked with developing the fastest swimsuit \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/worth.com\/innovator-fiona-fairhurst-speedo-fastskin-suit-swimming-creativity-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disregarded conventional wisdom<\/a> to achieve outstanding results. The status quo suggested that swimwear needed to be small and smooth to support speed and agility. \u201cBut Fiona disregards that advice,\u201d Josh said. \u201cShe says, \u2018Oh no, I&#8217;m not going to do that. I&#8217;m going to break it, to fix it.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, she took inspiration from sharks and designed full-coverage, textured swimwear. \u201cWhen Fiona launched this bathing suit, industry colleagues laughed at her. They thought this was a joke,\u201d Josh said. \u201cBut within two years of its launch, it was responsible for 80% of competitive medals around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can apply the same creativity to reimagine stale work processes. Don&#8217;t be afraid to break old ways of working that may be holding you back in order to explore new possibilities. Discarding the annual performance review process in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/continuous-performance-management-is-essential-to-your-strategic-plan\/\">continuous performance management<\/a>, for example, can transform performance outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to let go in order to move ahead: letting go of what was in favor of what can be; letting go of what is already there in favor of what&#8217;s possible,\u201d Josh said. \u201cAnd that&#8217;s a hallmark of innovators, and something that we can embrace as HR professionals and inject deep and wide in our organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/EHR-Recap-Josh-Linkner-Internal-2-2-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-106246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/EHR-Recap-Josh-Linkner-Internal-2-2-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/EHR-Recap-Josh-Linkner-Internal-2-2-980x555.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/EHR-Recap-Josh-Linkner-Internal-2-2-480x272.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stay-open-to-unexpected-solutions\">Stay open to unexpected solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase \u201cthere are no bad ideas\u201d takes on new significance in a culture of innovation. You must remain open to ideas that may sound preposterous on the surface, because often those ideas are most revolutionary. \u201cLet&#8217;s challenge ourselves a bit to go out on a limb, to look for those oddball, unexpected, unorthodox ideas, because sometimes those are the most effective,\u201d Josh said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By encouraging an attitude of curiosity and playfulness, you&#8217;ll empower your teams to look beyond standard solutions.
