Start by asking more intentional questions \u2014 questions ChatGPT can\u2019t answer, Riaz said. When he was a reporter, Riaz initially asked the people he interviewed transactional questions, with straightforward answers. \u201cI slowly began to realize I&#8217;m missing out on their humanity,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I found the questions that started with \u2018how\u2019 and \u2018what\u2019 led to more expansive emotional responses than \u2018who,\u2019 \u2018when,\u2019 and \u2018where.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A question like, \u201cWhat\u2019s a breakthrough you\u2019ve had recently?\u201d brings someone back to a meaningful moment, and something they might be proud of or excited to share with you. Leaders can build trust by going first and answering the question themselves, giving their team members permission to share their personal experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Riaz says that being deliberate in our approach is also critical: \u201cIf we move too fast, efficiency becomes the enemy of human connection.\u201d He encourages leaders to ask questions that empower people. Asking the right questions can have a tremendous impact, even changing the trajectory of a person\u2019s career.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Landman, formerly the global head of talent development at Goldman Sachs, and a member of Betterworks\u2019 HR Advisory Council, joined Riaz to share how a conversation years ago encouraged him to step into a much larger role being vacated by his well-respected boss \u2014 but one he wasn&#8217;t sure he was ready for. \u201cI had a really fantastic mentor who I think both asked me the right questions, but also shared their perspective on me and my capabilities that led me to have the bravery to have that conversation, and I got the job. I can root back a lot of my success to today to that moment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"reflecting-on-a-careerchanging-mentorship-8ded554a46a3270d\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/969953070?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-be-assertively-empathetic\">Be assertively empathetic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People go to great lengths to avoid conflict, especially at work, Riaz pointed out. But conflict itself isn\u2019t the greatest challenge. \u201cI think it&#8217;s a lack of acknowledgment surrounding the conflict we&#8217;re experiencing,\u201d Riaz said. \u201cAre we allowing people to feel seen in the struggles that they&#8217;re having, so we can be collaborative in these conversations and have productive disagreements?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Riaz suggests approaching conflict head-on, but from an empathetic perspective. If you address an issue with an employee and receive a heated reaction, lean into that. \u201cShare with me what makes this so important for you,\u201d Riaz suggested asking. Invite team members to reframe the challenges they\u2019re experiencing from a more positive perspective \u2014 and reinforce your role as their supporter, not an opponent in their efforts. \u201cThis is the two of us versus the challenge,\u201d Riaz said. \u201cThis isn&#8217;t me versus you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Webinar-Recap-Riaz-Meghji-Internal-2-1024x580.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-106778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Webinar-Recap-Riaz-Meghji-Internal-2-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Webinar-Recap-Riaz-Meghji-Internal-2-980x555.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Webinar-Recap-Riaz-Meghji-Internal-2-480x272.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-people-feel-famous\">Make people feel famous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/using-recognition-to-promote-workplace-culture-and-retention\/\">employees want to be recognized<\/a>, acknowledged, and celebrated for the impact they create at work. But many managers struggle to tailor acknowledgement to each person. \u201cWe miss out on the moment of articulating the impact of their contribution,\u201d Riaz said. \u201cSo how can we practice specificity with our praise to make it a superpower?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t wait to tell someone they did good work, or just say \u201cgood job\u201d without recognizing their impact on the team or the organization. Be urgent with your praise, and articulate your appreciation for what they\u2019ve done and how it\u2019s driven a wider impact. \u201cIf we make time to prioritize connection, we will be able to deepen trust so we can navigate those sensitive conversations,\u201d Riaz said. \u201cWe\u2019re calling people <em>up<\/em>, not calling people <em>out<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By leaning into meaningful conversations, you can cultivate the types of connections that drive real business impact \u2014 empowering you to \u201cout care\u201d your competition, Riaz said.
