{"id":4426,"date":"2018-07-05T16:40:21","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T23:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bwblogdev.wpengine.com\/?p=4426"},"modified":"2022-12-16T08:29:33","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T16:29:33","slug":"employees-dont-quit-their-jobs-they-quit-their-bosses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/employees-dont-quit-their-jobs-they-quit-their-bosses\/","title":{"rendered":"Employees Don\u2019t Quit Their Jobs, They Quit Their Bosses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone has heard the old saying regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/employees-dont-leave-companies-they-leave-bosses\/\">employees quitting managers<\/a>, not jobs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/this-company-lets-employees-rate-their-bosses-twice-a-year-1514991600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent data suggests it\u2019s still true<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; people are leaving otherwise fulfilling jobs due to unhappiness with their leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So as a manager, how do you know where you stand? As an employee, how do you provide upward feedback without feeling at risk of repercussions? Even if your manager isn\u2019t a \u201chorrible boss\u201d they likely have areas of improvement, and without a systematic way of collecting feedback on how will they (and their leadership) know where to focus? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all come to accept annual or more frequent feedback from a manager to an employee. But if your organization rates employees, why wouldn\u2019t you allow employees to rate managers? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these questions may also include upward feedback or improvement comments about how their manager works with their reports, the power dynamic makes upward feedback extremely challenging to all but the most self-confident employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Our solution: anonymous upward feedback. &nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pondering this dilemma, our CSM team decided to run an upward feedback cycle. In order to give the team assurances, they can speak honestly and directly to their manager, we set up the feedback to be anonymous with answers routed to HR, not the manager or skip the level. I communicated with the team to reinforce this session was for mutual benefit so treat it as a chance to provide constructive feedback, not praise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had 100 percent participation and the team provided great feedback about my management style and\/or things I can do to improve my leadership effectiveness. I\u2019ve shared the feedback summary with the team along with actions I\u2019ll take to improve in the areas identified. I\u2019ll also plan to check-in during 1:1s or with the team in 30 days to see if they are noticing improvements in the areas identified.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lessons learned:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one thing that was challenging about this process is knowing the overall severity of the feedback. Without the knowledge of who made the comment or providing some scale, it wasn\u2019t easy to distinguish areas for immediate attention vs minor feedback. When we do this again, I may include an overall rating along with the open-ended questions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what are you waiting for? If you don\u2019t want your employees to quit their manager, start giving them the tools and information both parties need to mutually improve.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n\n\n<div class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"><div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1606707794960\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">How many people leave their jobs because of their bosses?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">New research shows that over 57% of unhappy employees leave their jobs because of their bosses. This may be the person that they report to on projects or the actual owner or founder of the organization.<br\/><br\/>It&#8217;s true that bosses have the availability to shape a working environment, but if they opt to ignore obvious problems, avoid resolving disputes, or refuse to promote from within, a team member may grow to resent their boss. When this happens, the obvious next stop is to search for other employment.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1606707815623\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">Why do good employees quit?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Often, a good employee is seen as such for their devotion to the company for which they work. But what if a valuable employee feels as if their only option is to quit?<br\/><br\/>This typically comes from lack of communication and a poor company culture. The best ways to retain team members is to make them feel included and make it known that they are an irreplaceable, integral part of the team.<\/p> <\/div> <div class=\"schema-faq-section\" id=\"faq-question-1606707838573\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">How do you retain your best employees?<\/strong> <p class=\"schema-faq-answer\">Employee retention is at an all-time low, and there are plenty of good reasons for it. Many companies are oblivious to the things they can do to keep their valuable team members.<br\/><br\/>The key to retention is deeply rooted in engagement.
