The report, which includes a forward by Josh Bersin, reveals that most people managers find their organizations\u2019 talent management wanting in almost every area&#8230;and it\u2019s hurting their businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your organization\u2019s people managers play an outsized role in improving overall workforce performance through the day to day actions that motivate, engage and develop their teams. The managers that Betterworks surveyed overwhelmingly expressed that when it comes to the talent management processes they currently use within their own organizations, nearly every aspect has significant room for improvement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecoming a manager is one of the most transformational parts of your career, and for most of us, the transition from \u2018doing the job\u2019 to \u2018leading and helping others to do the job\u2019 is a big change,\u201d said <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/joshbersin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bersin<\/a>, who in addition to being an advisor to the Betterworks board of directors also penned the forward of the report and advised the research. \u201cOne of the key parts of this journey is a company\u2019s performance and talent management process, and as this research shows people managers don\u2019t always feel fully supported. In fact, their performance and talent management practices often get in the way rather than help them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-key-insights-from-the-research-include\">Some Key Insights from the Research Include:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-managers-lack-a-sense-of-purpose\">Managers Lack a Sense of Purpose<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent research from DDI found that companies with clear objectives<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ddiworld.com\/resources\/library\/trend-research\/global-leadership-forecast-2018\" target=\"_blank\"> outperform the market by 42%<\/a>. However, most managers in the Betterworks survey reported experiencing a significant lack of purpose in their organization and serious challenges around organizational alignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Just one-third of managers were \u201cconfident that all employees had a clear understanding of the company\u2019s mission and vision\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just 39% felt their senior leaders lived the stated values<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-managers-feel-an-alarming-lack-of-alignment\">Managers Feel an Alarming Lack of Alignment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>62% admitted their organization did not communicate goals and priorities clearly enough so everyone knew what they were accountable for<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And a similar percentage did not have a clear understanding of top company priorities for the next 12 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-managers-find-little-value-in-current-performance-management-processes\">Managers Find Little Value in Current Performance Management Processes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Performance programs are supposed to help managers coach their employees, communicate key objectives, and set and manage goals. However, the Betterworks survey found that many managers view their current performance processes as outdated and more of a hindrance than a help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only 43% of managers are held accountable for developing their people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>63% fail to have regular development conversations with their teams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>59% of managers and employees \u201cdo not perceive their performance management process as valuable.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-development-opportunities-for-managers-are-scarce\">Development Opportunities for Managers are Scarce<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to be effective, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/survey-confirms-focusing-on-helping-managers-improve-is-critical-to-boosting-overall-workforce-performance-300749369.html\" target=\"_blank\">managers must be taught to think more like coaches and equipped with the training and tools required<\/a> to provide effective feedback to their teams. However, the research found that management coaching is not expected or encouraged in most organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>33% of managers rate their organization\u2019s training and development as average or below<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>58% of companies still primarily reward people \u201cbased on job level or tenure\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-perceptions-held-by-middle-and-front-line-managers-are-much-more-negative-than-those-of-senior-leaders\">Perceptions Held by Middle and Front-Line Managers are Much More Negative than Those of Senior Leaders<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Just 34% of managers say \u201call of the employees have a clear understanding of the company\u2019s vision and mission,\u201d as opposed to 49% of senior leaders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only 37% of managers say they are held accountable for developing their people, as opposed to 51% of senior leaders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While 39% of senior leaders responded that \u201cin my company, employees do not feel overworked,\u201d only 22% of managers agreed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these challenges, the survey also revealed some encouraging results. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/to-enhance-performance-management-outcomes-focus-on-helping-managers-improve\/\" target=\"_blank\">Managers need help from training and technology to become better talent coaches<\/a>, paired with a performance process that is flexible enough to deal with the changing nature of the modern workplace. A continuous approach to performance management has proven to be effective in meeting these requirements. Independent findings from Gallup report that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/238064\/re-engineering-performance-management.aspx#aspnetForm\" target=\"_blank\">when performance management programs become more continuous, 90% of companies see a direct lift in employee engagement<\/a>. Among the managers surveyed by Betterworks, <strong>38% expressed their company\u2019s performance management process included at least some \u2018continuous\u2019 elements<\/strong> of goal setting, alignment, or continuous feedback and development. This is an indicator that these proven practices are becoming more mainstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour people managers make or break your organization\u2019s performance.
