Leaders exist at every level of a company, from the executive suite to the front lines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/events.betterworks.com\/empower-hr\/agenda?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=events&amp;utm_campaign=empowerhr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EmpowerHR Summit<\/a>, Betterworks CEO, Doug Dennerline, sat down with Indra Nooyi, former CEO at PepsiCo and author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/My-Life-Full-Family-Future\/dp\/059319179X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">My Life in Full<\/a>,\u201d to discuss fostering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/accountability-in-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leadership<\/a> across all levels of an organization. \u201cA leader has to have incredible courage to craft a path into the future,\u201d Nooyi says, \u201cbut more importantly, articulate the paths \u2026 that everybody wants to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how you can think like a leader and foster the next generation of successors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-provide-direction-to-those-behind-you\">Provide Direction to Those Behind You<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Front-line and middle managers aren\u2019t there to micromanage employees. They should serve as teachers and facilitators for their team members. Managers are responsible for helping those under their direction move forward, and they can do that by giving and accepting feedback. Employees want to do better, Nooyi says, but they can\u2019t if their managers aren\u2019t giving them the knowledge and resources they need to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Checks and balances are needed to ensure that managers elevate their teams, not dragging them down. At PepsiCo, Nooyi asked employees to assess their managers annually. This process helped identify weak points not just within management, but also within the company as a whole because weak managers lead weak teams. \u201cWherever the manager quality metrics were very poor, the performance of the group was poor, and the attrition rates were high,\u201d Nooyi says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strong managers, on the other hand, lead teams that thrive. Nooyi recognized that to empower teams and a company\u2019s long-term health, the company had to give managers the resources and education they needed to be good leaders. PepsiCo implemented a training program for first-time managers to help new managers become teachers and facilitate team success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-turn-talent-into-your-competitive-advantage\">Turn Talent Into Your Competitive Advantage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many business leaders still perceive HR leaders as enforcers of compliance, but their role is to grow talent in the company as a competitive resource, Nooyi says. HR leaders should have an operational background to change their perspective on talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HR professionals should think of themselves as a talent agency, Nooyi says, where the talent itself is the company\u2019s biggest asset. An important factor in growing and developing the right talent is embracing the best candidates, regardless of differing demographics or backgrounds. \u201cIf you go gender blind \u2014 or background blind \u2014 and pick the best and the brightest, you&#8217;ll end up with a different workforce,\u201d Nooyi says. \u201cAnd that&#8217;s what we need to do. We need to think that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing and developing talent is such a valuable skill that Nooyi believes that before anyone becomes a CEO, they should play an active role in HR. The experience of developing talent to support strategic business outcomes lends a perspective that many leadership candidates don\u2019t have, and it\u2019s a perspective that drives business success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-create-paths-for-others-to-follow\">Create Paths for Others to Follow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders are trailblazers, and they don\u2019t have to have formal titles to create paths that others can follow. Anyone can influence the people around them, and in that sense, they become leaders. &#8220;Listen to the people around you to learn about the paths that lead to success and about what people truly want to do within their career,&#8221; Nooyi says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But once you\u2019ve achieved a high-level position, it\u2019s hard to maintain your perch. \u201cClimbing the mountain is bad enough, but staying at the top of the summit is much harder,\u201d Nooyi says. Approach leadership with intellectual humility. Don\u2019t assume that you know more than anyone else just because you hold the top position. And continue to seek out knowledge: <em>Never<\/em> stop developing your skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders need to consider outside perspectives, too. Nooyi learned about design thinking from Steve Jobs and brought the idea back to PepsiCo. That required bringing in new talent and growing the design department, but it was transformative for the business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Nooyi reminds us that leaders are part of an ongoing cycle. Leaders will come and go, but the company will outlast their contributions. Leaders have to think about the long-term health of the company and the workforce. \u201cThe feeling of purpose has got to stay deep in your heart,\u201d Nooyi says.<br><br><a
