Check out these highlights from Ryan\u2019s keynote to learn how to drive positive impact for the business and your people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-drive-continuous-reinvention\">Drive continuous reinvention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan teaches that disruption is an opportunity for reinvention. He refers to leaders who not only adapt but embrace continuous reinvention in the face of change as <a href=\"https:\/\/ryanestis.com\/leadership\/reinvent-your-business-model\/\">Futuremakers<\/a>. Futuremakers are students and learners who have the courage to act on what they learn. With Starbucks facing an identity crisis, Schultz set out to fix it. His plan included spending time with employees as part of a listening tour and suspending stock buybacks to redirect that money toward operations and the workforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Schultz rebuilt trust, he needed to learn from the front lines. His actions embody the adage, \u201cSeek first to understand, then to be understood,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schultz invited the voice, perspective, and participation of employees \u2014 reexamining and redefining what it means to be a Starbucks partner in order to engineer a better workforce experience. Now, businesses across sectors need HR\u2019s leadership to transform how we work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can either evolve and make a significant contribution to the business or be diminished and dispersed,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a change agent with the courage and conviction to challenge leaders is crucial. Ryan\u2019s HR philosophy is influenced by his friend <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.walmart.com\/leadership\/donna-morris\">Donna Morris, an HR leader at Walmart<\/a>. Her priority is to reimagine HR to have the best possible impact on the business. HR has to deliver the fundamentals flawlessly, but you also have to lead growth and transformation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incumbent upon us to look around the business and see, where are the strategic imperatives? Where are the opportunities to truly make work better?\u201d he said, echoing Donna\u2019s philosophy. \u201cThat\u2019s how she sees the role of HR: As a strategic consultant driving change, innovation, and growth to the business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exceptional HR leaders put strategy first and function second. They go beyond optimizing processes to transforming the organization as a whole. They bring a unique and valuable viewpoint to the boardroom. It\u2019s about creating better, more human experiences \u2014 and much of that comes down to helping employees find their purpose. \u201cWe have a responsibility to leave our people better than we found them,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mayo Clinic provides a prime example of a \u201cpurpose-driven, values-led organization,\u201d Ryan said. During an engagement with the clinic, Ryan interviewed hundreds of employees to discover what galvanized the workforce. \u201cIn about the first 60 seconds of any conversation with any and every Mayo employee,\u201d Ryan said, \u201cyou would hear those seven words: \u2018The needs of the patient come first.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the Mayo Clinic\u2019s purpose, and it\u2019s ingrained and internalized across the board. \u201cIt was very clear there was an alignment, across 40,000 employees, that their work mattered,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mayo Clinic also offers an employee value proposition: if you come to work here, you can make people\u2019s lives better. The promise that Mayo Clinic provides to employees is that <em>their <\/em>lives will improve, too.&nbsp;<br>During the engagement, Ryan interviewed the Mayo Clinic\u2019s new employees to test that proposition. His first interview was with Jeremy, whose powerful testimony revealed how working at the Mayo Clinic changed his life. \u201cIt <em>refuels<\/em> me; it doesn\u2019t just use me,\u201d Jeremy told Ryan. Human-centric leadership truly changes lives, and makes work better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-never-been-more-important-to-put-people-first\"><br>It\u2019s never been more important to put people first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all heard that employees don\u2019t leave jobs \u2014 they leave managers. And with employees vacating jobs at record levels, it\u2019s never been more important to reframe what good leadership means.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLeadership isn\u2019t a job: It\u2019s a responsibility,\u201d Ryan said. Good leaders demonstrate humility, commitment, and love \u2014 and they help other people become the best version of themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be a human-centric leader, you need to show up as the best version of yourself. Ask yourself:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What do I want to be known for?&nbsp;<\/li><li>How will I be remembered by the people I work with today?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Answering these questions can help you prioritize your best self \u2014 and how you can draw that out of others. There is nothing more meaningful for a leader.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan closed his session with a call to action. \u201cWhen you make work better, you actually make the lives of the people doing the work better,\u201d Ryan said, \u201cand that\u2019s what changes the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Interested in hearing his entire presentation?
