A global pandemic has altered our lives and workplaces in unprecedented ways, and as we navigate those challenges, another looms large: climate catastrophe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s something <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/john-doerr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Doerr<\/a> \u2014 Silicon Valley luminary, venture capitalist, and Betterworks board member \u2014 says we can\u2019t allow to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/event.on24.com\/eventRegistration\/EventLobbyServlet?target=lobby30.jsp&amp;eventid=4049100&amp;sessionid=1&amp;format=fhvideo1&amp;key=043418B15FD9A75730FAC5F387A96EFD&amp;eventuserid=585352940\">next session of our People Fundamentals webinar series<\/a>, Doerr will join Betterworks COO Andrea Lagan and VP of HR Transformation Jamie Aitken to explore ways you can lead your organization through a committed action plan for climate preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll aim to answer the question: What can we, as business and HR leaders, do right now to help make change and align with the concerns and values of employees? Manifesting the change we want to see requires us to evolve workplace culture and tap into employee passion and purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stepping-up-to-the-challenge\">Stepping up to the challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses leave a big impact on the environment, and that gives you a unique opportunity to make a difference. \u201cWe aren&#8217;t on track to solve this problem \u2014 but there&#8217;s hope,\u201d Doerr says. \u201cThis is the hardest thing humanity has ever tried to do. It&#8217;s going to require all of us and all of our organizations to get there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your capacity to drive change isn\u2019t unlimited, so it\u2019s important to hone in on actions that will have the biggest impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enacting meaningful change by reducing your organization\u2019s carbon output is a critical step to solving other challenges faced by your workforce and community. Lately, there\u2019s been a lot of corporate focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, but the \u201cE\u201d in ESG deserves special commitment, Doerr says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis ESG movement is getting politicized, and none of us want to politicize the workplace,\u201d he remarks. \u201cBut I think centering \u2014 not to the point of exclusion, but to prioritization \u2014 on climate is going to be a surefire way to address <em>all<\/em> of the ESG agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Sustaining your commitment to climate preservation calls for organization-wide efforts \u2014 and that means you have to empower all of your people to participate in climate progress.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understand-the-urgency\">Understand the urgency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re failing to achieve what we must in order to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/net-zero-coalition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cut emissions by 50% by 2030<\/a>, and to take our 59 gigatons per year of emissions to net zero by 2050,\u201d he says. \u201cA number of companies have signed up for that, but their commitments are incomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, that\u2019s because business leaders aren\u2019t sure what actions are most important to take. That\u2019s why Doerr, author of <em>Measure What Matters<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/speedandscale.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Speed and Scale,<\/em><\/a> created an <a href=\"https:\/\/speedandscale.com\/2022-action-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">action guide<\/a> to help you channel your commitment into measurable change. The guide outlines 10 specific objectives and measurable key results for individuals, communities, and business leaders to take responsibility for driving change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a leader and influencer, you can convert to carbon-free energy,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can decarbonize your transportation of people and goods. You can shrink the carbon footprint of goods or services that you manufacture or that you deliver. You can purchase high-quality carbon removal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-empower-people-to-be-change-agents\">Empower people to be change agents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustaining your commitment to climate preservation calls for organization-wide efforts \u2014 and that means you have to empower all of your people to participate in climate progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Help team members set and achieve goals that are relevant to reducing your carbon footprint. Facilitate conversations between managers and team members about how they can minimize their environmental impact in day-to-day work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That commitment can help sustain engagement and action within the workforce. For a climate advocate, working for a company that&#8217;s doing meaningful work and committed to cutting emissions casts a different light on the employment relationship, and the employee\u2019s commitment to the organization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Younger workers are especially invested in solving the climate crisis, Doerr notes. \u201cThis is the kind of conversation young people want to have,\u201d Doerr says. \u201cThey want to be heard and they want to act, and our responsibility as stewards of businesses and societies is to hear them out, empower them \u2014 and get out of their way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saving the planet from climate change is a monumental task and one that we\u2019re already behind on.
