That\u2019s a big opportunity for HR, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/deloria-nelson-streete-54822711\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deloria Nelson-Streete<\/a>, president at <a href=\"https:\/\/acesolutionsgroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Authentic Culture &amp; Engagement Solutions Inc.<\/a>, whose optimistic yet realistic brand of HR has taught her how to make the most of challenging situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur idea of meaning and importance and life and all of that&#8217;s shifted,\u201d she says. \u201cThe ground is literally moving under our feet. Companies, as well as HR, are trying to figure it out.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To navigate changing priorities, Nelson-Streete says, organizations need to learn to lead with love.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI get to know you and have an authentic relationship with you. I know what&#8217;s important to you,\u201d she says. \u201cIf I lead you with love, it&#8217;s trying to put you in \u200cspaces where you can shine, putting you on assignments and work that&#8217;s meaningful to you, giving you the flexibility that you need to live your life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees are holding organizations more accountable for creating a better, more purpose-driven experience, so we asked Nelson-Streete to share her advice for leading with love to help people shine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-equity-doesn-t-mean-equal\">Equity doesn\u2019t mean equal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every person is unique, and that\u2019s a powerful opportunity for translating the creativity, enthusiasm, and loyalty of your people into business impact \u2014 but only if you get to know them for who they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you get to know your people, you get to know what\u2019s important to them,\u201d Nelson-Streete says. \u201cOne size doesn&#8217;t fit all. It never did. But now people are claiming their independence; people are a lot more courageous about standing in their truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A neurodivergent employee, for example, may need to listen to music or have a familiar TV show running in the background to help them focus better. For someone else, that might be a distraction; but for this employee, it\u2019s how they work best. By creating an environment where an employee feels comfortable asking for that, and where those needs are \u200crespected and addressed, you can empower people to perform at their best every day. This is a big shift from how we\u2019ve traditionally managed people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the past, HR was rewarded for consistency and sameness,\u201d Nelson-Streete says. \u201cWhat is needed is flexibility and individuality, which is very similar to <em>equity<\/em>. That takes a major toll on an organization\u2019s ability to differentiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe amount of energy people spend shapeshifting to fit in is energy that they could be using to create, to innovate,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to get all of this out the way so people can focus on meaningful work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every person brings a unique value-add to workplace culture. (That\u2019s why the language is shifting from prioritizing \u201cculture fit\u201d to seeking \u201cculture add.\u201d) To harness that value, though, we need to move from simply accepting differences in others to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kornferry.com\/content\/dam\/kornferry\/docs\/fact-sheets\/ConsciousInclusion_FactSheet_Final.pdf\">truly appreciating them<\/a>. When a manager recognizes how a team member\u2019s unique background and experiences could be a value-add, they can help draw that out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But overcoming decades of conforming isn\u2019t easy, Nelson-Streete says: \u201cWhat are the things you have to unlearn so you can bring your whole self to work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The responsibility doesn\u2019t fall exclusively on individuals. That takes managers stopping to learn who their team members are and observing where they shine. \u201cSometimes people don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re good at,\u201d Nelson-Streete says. \u201cGive a person a chance to find out.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Train managers to be observant and provide specific feedback. During a large project, for example, a manager might notice which elements of the work an employee does especially well. The manager can bring that up during a performance conversation and present that team member with opportunities to explore that skill set in new ways. It\u2019s all about asking questions to learn what work resonates most with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReally pay attention to how they work, what they get excited about,\u201d Nelson-Streete says. \u201cA great assignment is appreciation. People want to find meaning in what they do, to feel like it has some level of significance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meaningful work goes beyond day-to-day tasks, though \u2014 it extends to creating a culture that employees believe in. \u201cPeople have higher expectations now,\u201d Nelson-Streete says. \u201cYou can\u2019t straddle the fence anymore.\u201d More organizations are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/enabling-esg-performance\/\">doubling down on environmental, social, and governance initiatives<\/a>, for example, because it\u2019s important to not just shareholders and customers but also the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies have gotten better about standing up for what\u2019s right, but it\u2019s an increasing expectation among the workforce that companies need to lean into more heavily. \u201cWhen something happens, you need to let your employees know where you stand,\u201d Nelson-Streete says. \u201cAnything that shows disrespect for anybody, you should stand against. And you should stand against it loudly.\u201d Not taking a clear stance is a big risk that can undermine your culture. \u201cSilence is loud,\u201d Nelson-Streete says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But by being vocal about your values and training managers to apply them to draw out the best in their people, you can create a culture that leads with love and gives every person the chance to shine their light on others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Employees today prioritize meaningful and fulfilling work.
