Before that, we caught up with Lim to get her perspective on the role of leaders, HR, and managers in delivering happiness at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cOne of the tenets of meaningful happiness is being authentic: feeling you can show up, feeling like you belong. Your enthusiastic support is a key ingredient of ongoing organizational change. \u201cThe biggest challenge is if the company does not prioritize this \u2014 if they see it as a nice-to-have versus need-to-have,\u201d Lim says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond providing initial support, you need to communicate that you <em>want<\/em> people to feel more fulfilled, especially at work. Culture is the key to driving those efforts. \u201cIf there is true intention to have a more fulfilled workforce \u2026 instead of having a policy, it\u2019s more about having a solid and strong foundation of culture,\u201d Lim says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does that look like in practice? \u201cThere are levers as leaders that we can help people on our teams tap into,\u201d Lim says. Those levers include a sense of autonomy, freedom, flexibility, progress, connectedness through meaningful relationships, and, most importantly, a higher purpose. Incorporating these elements into company culture is a critical first step to building a happier workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hr-creates-an-environment-where-happiness-blossoms\">HR creates an environment where happiness blossoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the pandemic, HR leaders have had to reimagine the purpose of their own work. \u201cThe companies that get it realize they have to rethink everything,\u201d Lim says. That\u2019s been an ongoing challenge, but it also opens opportunities to plant new seeds and focus on new priorities, like fostering happiness. You have the power \u201cto say, \u2018This is what we do; this is what we\u2019re here for,\u2019\u201d Lim continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the secrets to enduring happiness at work is for employees to find it themselves. Happiness isn\u2019t something you can force from the top down. To get the ball rolling, it\u2019s up to HR to change the language it uses to refer to what employees offer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about the whole person \u2014 their emotional, mental, social, and financial well-being \u2014 and not just their skillset or what they can deliver, supports an environment of psychological safety where happiness can blossom. \u201cHR can play a huge role in creating that environment and having that open dialogue so people feel that they\u2019re actually cared for,\u201d Lim says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delivering happiness at work is an ongoing commitment. It\u2019s not a program you can launch and leave. \u201cThat\u2019s just not how it works because it\u2019s not operationalized; it\u2019s not systemic,\u201d Lim says. \u201cThe challenge is seeing&nbsp; it as a long-term journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like anything, a happiness program ebbs and flows; it must be nurtured. \u201cIt\u2019s like a greenhouse,\u201d Lim says. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to create the right conditions and then constantly tend to it, constantly test new things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>One of the secrets to enduring happiness at work is for employees to find it themselves. To do that, though, managers need to be able to cultivate happiness in themselves first. \u201cThe people they interact with are going to feel whatever they\u2019re bringing to the workplace,\u201d Lim says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HR can provide the tools and resources managers need to be able to find happiness themselves. One of the best ways to do that is to help managers find their higher purpose and values to draw that out in others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat is it that they want to prioritize in their life, from the time they wake up to the time they go to sleep?\u201d Lim says. \u201cI guarantee you it\u2019s not always work.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by having a simple conversation with your managers. Ask them these questions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What fires you up (in good or bad ways)?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are you good at?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What&#8217;s your intended impact on the people you touch in your ecosystem?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The answers to these questions produce a draft (or refined) purpose statement managers can use to direct their actions. Managers can, in turn, host this activity with their teams to create a continuing dialog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But to empower employees to find their purpose, we need to broaden the conversation to address how we treat each other as people, not just as employees. \u201cWhen we talk about purpose, it\u2019s not about your purpose at work. It\u2019s actually more about your purpose in <em>life<\/em>,\u201d she says. \u201cOne of the tenets of meaningful happiness is being authentic: feeling you can show up, feeling like you belong. That\u2019s what we\u2019re driving toward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding a broader purpose creates a \u200cfoundational layer to finding happiness and wholeness at work. It starts with being introspective and self-aware and providing prompts to others. \u201cBeing inward is what we can do as leaders to help people get to that place and be more grounded, even though there\u2019s still a lot of chaotic things happening in the world,\u201d Lim says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delivering happiness is an ongoing priority, and it\u2019s a priority that employees will appreciate. \u201cThere\u2019s no silver bullet to all this,\u201d Lim says. \u201cIt\u2019s about being able to engage in these real conversations, with psychological safety, that people really want to have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to learn more about fostering happiness at work?
