Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, more companies are rethinking their people processes and challenging HR leaders to do better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is the moment to make work better, says Ruettimann, author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Betting-You-Yourself-Finally-Control\/dp\/1250269806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Betting on You<\/a>\u201d and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/laurieruettimann.com\/podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Punk Rock HR<\/a>. \u201cPlacing performance management at the center of your HR department, even just thematically,\u201d Ruettimann says, \u201ccan give you a new and insightful lens to fix the world of work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We invited Ruettimann to emcee our upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/laurie-ruettimann-performance-management-first-step-to-fixing-work\/\">Empower HR<\/a> virtual event, where she\u2019ll share her refreshing perspective on how to fix work. Ahead of the event, we talked with Ruettimann about why fixing performance management is the first step in making work better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-redefining-performance\">Redefining performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we can fix performance management, we need to redefine what it means \u2014 and why it should align closely with business results. \u201cReally understanding performance means really understanding the strategic imperatives of the business,\u201d Ruettimann says. \u201cLet&#8217;s get granular about performance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That requires \u201ca crystal-clear look at business goals and objectives,\u201d Ruettimann says. They will approach change with a level of trust instead of doubting or judging you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the basics of good communication and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/how-your-culture-can-drive-business-results\/\">healthy culture<\/a> in place, you can build out great processes and implement cutting-edge technology that serves the workforce\u2019s needs. \u201cWhen I first started working in human resources, HR technology was email and Excel,\u201d Ruettimann says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s HR tech can \u201ccreate an employee experience that&#8217;s cohesive, that&#8217;s meaningful \u2014 but is also theirs and not HR\u2019s,\u201d she continues. \u201cI get excited when HR technology is not branded as HR. While burnout is nothing new, recent generations have centered more and more of their lives and worth on their job. \u201cWe&#8217;re living a softer, easier life in many ways than our ancestors,\u201d Ruettimann says, \u201cyet we talk about burnout a lot more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic\u2019s stressors and disruptions to workplaces have only made this burnout worse. \u201cDistributed work, hybrid work, the crazy chaotic way that we&#8217;re trying to figure out the workforce and the work structure of the next decade is contributing to a lot of burnout, to people feeling exhausted and like they can never turn it off,\u201d Ruettimann says. \u201cI think we also have technology that&#8217;s ever-pervasive and compelling us, by design, to be online all day long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we\u2019re going to fix work, your employees need to be empowered to set boundaries for themselves \u2014 and that starts with you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;re the canary in the coal mine. You&#8217;re the leading indicator of how your workforce feels,\u201d Ruettimann says. \u201cBut I\u2019m optimistic that human resources leaders can be leaders in terms of boundaries and well-being.
