That\u2019s why Betterworks\u2019 Doug Dennerline and Jamie Aitken wrote their upcoming book, <a href=\"https:\/\/makeworkbetter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Make Work Better<\/em><\/a>, to introduce a performance enablement model that delivers value to every stakeholder \u2014 including employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At our <a href=\"https:\/\/golive.on24.com\/event\/4110262\/registration\">EmpowerHR virtual event<\/a>, Dennerline and Aitken welcomed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/humera-malik-shahid-463364\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Humera Shahid<\/a>, Intuit\u2019s chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer and vice president of talent development, to share her team\u2019s experience with adopting a performance enablement model. \u201cWe really listen to our customer \u2014 and our customer is the employee,\u201d Shahid said. By taking an \u201cemployee-centric view, then we&#8217;re able to put things in place that actually matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out highlights from the conversation to learn more about Intuit\u2019s performance enablement journey and how to get started at your organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em><strong>\u201cThis is a time where we can now talk about company and individual performance together, and so we took advantage of the business, and what our employees were saying, and went on this journey of performance enablement.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><cite>Humera Shahid, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer and VP of Talent Development, Intuit<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-driving-performance-in-an-evolving-world\">Driving performance in an evolving world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The workplace is evolving faster than ever, but traditional performance management is historically slow-moving. This outdated approach is holding employees back from reaching their full potential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe pace of change in technology, as well as in other industries, is so fast,\u201d Shahid said. Reviewing performance only once a year \u201cdoesn&#8217;t fully reflect or appreciate everything that happens in this really fast-moving environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intuit is deeply familiar with adapting to change. The company is known for its software-as-a-service offerings but is becoming a platform company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/blog\/innovative-thinking\/the-new-ceo-of-intuit-says-the-rise-of-artificial-intelligence-will-be-as-big-a-challenge-as-the-companys-shift-to-cloud-computing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">powered by artificial intelligence<\/a>. To support this shift and empower broader, more integrated solutions, Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi wants to see more people working across functions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to have shared goals now because we have to \u2026 and we want transparency around that and to build that shared accountability,\u201d Shahid said. Her team heard from Intuit employees who wanted more performance feedback so they could achieve better outcomes during this transformation moment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a time where we can now talk about company and individual performance together,\u201d Shahid said, \u201cand so we took advantage of the business, and what our employees were saying, and went on this journey of performance enablement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-maximizing-potential-through-frequent-conversations\">Maximizing potential through frequent conversations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As an HR leader, Shahid sees her role as helping everyone in the organization achieve more than they believed was possible. She believes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/product\/performance-review-software\/\">frequent conversation model<\/a> for helping employees learn how to accomplish their goals more effectively. \u201cThat idea of just constant ongoing dialogue around performance was really what we wanted to hone into and emphasize,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shahid and her team implemented monthly check-in conversations to help managers and team members align on expectations, dynamically adjust goals, and focus on development. Twice per year, those monthly check-ins focus on career aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those ongoing conversations are the key to Intuit\u2019s success, Shahid said. Dennerline notes that many people won\u2019t recognize the value until \u201cthree or four quarters of going through this different way.\u201d The repetition, over time, builds rapport and trust so employees can get what they need from these conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective change management and communication are essential for helping leaders, managers, and employees understand <em>why<\/em> you\u2019re shifting to a performance enablement model, Aitken said. Regularly reinforce the benefits of ongoing performance conversations, and celebrate small victories along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n<cite><strong>&#8220;Effective change management and communication are essential for helping leaders, managers, and employees understand why you&#8217;re shifting to a performance enablement model.&#8221;<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"htoc-jamie-aitken-vp-of-ht-transformation-betterworks\"><em> Jamie Aitken, VP of HT Transformation, Betterworks<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Since implementing a performance enablement model, Intuit has seen a high rate of adoption for goal-setting.
