What\u2019s going on with manager effectiveness, and how can HR leaders address it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge starts with the unprecedented expectations placed on managers. \u201cWe\u2019re asking them to do more training, to meet new expectations, try new leadership approaches,\u201d Garr said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garr shared advice for HR leaders who want to deliver the support and circumstances that managers need to elevate their teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-provide-organizational-support\">Provide organizational support&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Managers need structured support from the business. But organizational support has declined in two important ways that affect manager effectiveness, Garr said. One, organizations are providing less clarity on what employees need to do to succeed. Two, organizations are giving managers less data-based insight into employee engagement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we see here really is the organization&#8217;s role and opportunity to provide the structure for managers to succeed,\u201d Garr said. The benefits to organizations are threefold, as Stacia explains in this video clip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stacia Blog Clip\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/842539798?h=a2abcfa6fd&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To better support managers, train them to do more than simply check in with team members. \u201cWhat we&#8217;re talking about here is actually putting in place the resources, tools, support, and the continual check-ins from HR and senior leaders to enable this behavior change,\u201d Garr said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These might include processes for revisiting and refining goals on a quarterly basis or conversation prompts that guide performance feedback.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/udemy-case-study\/\"> <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/udemy-case-study\/\">Udemy implemented Betterworks<\/a> to drive transparency around team priorities, Garr said. So, what accounts for the decline in manager effectiveness, and how can managers increase their impact?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garr emphasizes the importance of connection, which comes in multiple forms, from emotional connections to the strategic connections between people and goals that help employees work better. Making these connections does have a measurable and positive impact on how employees see the effectiveness of their managers, their eNPS score, and their likelihood of remaining with the organization, according to RedThread\u2019s research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transparency is another key need for managers, although they need organizational support to do this, Garr says. An accessible technology platform makes this easier, as employees can see what\u2019s happening across the organization.
