With that evolution comes a new set of challenges. The more we invite people to bring their whole selves to work, the more likely HR leaders are to have to address issues that weren\u2019t so openly discussed in the workplace 5-10 years ago, such as mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAcross industries we see it impacting people\u2019s lives at work, including those of HR professionals,\u201d Patton says. \u201cThese leaders often feel as though they\u2019re charged with resolving related concerns \u2014 but with a scope that expands beyond the workplace into personal territory, which they\u2019re not necessarily equipped or responsible for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But work can have a positive impact, too, and Patton is on a mission to inform and empower other HR professionals. Check out Patton\u2019s advice for connecting workers with the resources they need and creating a supportive environment where people can thrive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-draw-the-line-between-what-you-can-and-can-t-resolve\">Draw the line between what you can and can\u2019t resolve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As business leaders in HR, your instinct is to solve problems that affect the business. But when mental health is a factor, you can\u2019t always fix the root problem. Failing to address mental health concerns can put the business at risk \u2014 but not every concern can be handled without crossing boundaries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a line between helping employees resolve things that actually impact their work and the things that a licensed counselor or psychologist needs to help them with,\u201d Patton says. \u200c\u201cHaving the skill to separate what\u2019s about work and what\u2019s not about work is key.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resources like the Center for Workplace Mental Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/workplacementalhealth.org\/employer-resources\/training-and-turnkey-programs\/notice-talk-act-at-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Notice.Talk.Act. at Work<\/a> training program can help managers and HR professionals recognize where to draw that line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you understand that distinction, the next step is pointing people in the right direction. \u201cTrying to get the employees to resources quickly, and making decisions around what&#8217;s needed in the situation quickly, will be beneficial to leaders,\u201d Patton says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-recommendedread-Z1R20qP align  wp-block-lazyblock-recommendedread\">        <div class=\"recommended-read-notice\">Recommended Read<\/div> \n        <div class=\"recommended-read-box\">\n            <div class=\"recommended-read-image\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/How-to-Prevent-Employee-Burnout-by-Embracing-Performance-Management-SEO-Blog-Thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n            <\/div>          \n            <div class=\"recommended-read-text\">\n                <div class=\"recommended-read-categories\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/category\/vantage-point\/employee-experience\/\">Employee Experience<\/a> | <a href=\"\/performance-management\/\">Performance Management<\/a><\/div>\n                <div class=\"recommended-read-title\">How to Prevent Employee Burnout by Embracing Performance Enablement<\/div>\n                <div><a class=\"recommended-read-cta\" href=\"https:\/\/www.betterworks.com\/magazine\/how-to-prevent-employee-burnout-through-performance-enablement\/\">Read Now<\/a><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-focus-on-what-people-need\">Focus on what people need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The wider conversation about mental health has more people talking about depression, attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder, and autism \u2014 including employees. Our knowledge of basic factors like how exercise, <a href=\"https:\/\/justwater.com\/blogs\/news\/how-hydration-nutrition-affect-your-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hydration and nutrition affect mental health<\/a> has improved, though our understanding of specific disorders is sometimes still lacking. Also, not everyone has access to the medical care they need to get a diagnosis. And that\u2019s before considering that mental health diagnoses manifest differently for individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental health conversations at work shouldn\u2019t be about labels. \u201cDon&#8217;t focus on what they have,\u201d Patton says. \u201cFocus on what they <em>need<\/em>.\u201d For example, an employee may <em>have <\/em>an otherwise well-managed anxiety disorder that&#8217;s being exacerbated by the pressures of completing a particularly challenging project. What they <em>need <\/em>may be a day or two off to help them recover when the project is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some employees may not feel comfortable asking for what they need \u2014 especially if they don\u2019t talk to their managers regularly. Regular check-ins help you proactively address employee needs as well as performance issues, including those where mental health plays a role. \u200c\u201cSometimes managers <em>and<\/em> employees wait too long to start having these conversations,\u201d Patton says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Left unchecked, these situations can escalate. But \u201chaving that open line of communication helps to minimize what could turn into a bigger issue,\u201d she says. \u201cEmpower leaders and HR professionals to check in with people on a regular cadence,\u201d she continues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong><em>Some employees may not feel comfortable asking for what they need \u2014 especially if they don\u2019t talk to their managers regularly. Regular check-ins help you proactively address employee needs as well as performance issues, including those where mental health plays a role.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tap-into-company-resources\">Tap into company resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only do companies need more education on mental health issues at work, but they also need better training options. \u201cI do not observe many organizations delivering regular training on how to manage mental health at work and still have a functional business,\u201d Patton says. Employee assistance programs (EAPs) can offer support for managing complex mental health situations at work, but EAPs aren\u2019t a substitute for a comprehensive company approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you have employees who mental health concerns and you&#8217;re trying to manage their performance, don\u2019t try to think through the solutions for potential accommodations all on your own,\u201d Patton says. \u201cMaybe get an attorney or your HR managers together in a group setting to think through the ways that you can help so it&#8217;s a group effort, and it&#8217;s not all on one person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another solution might be enlisting mental health professionals to help resolve work-related issues. Having a qualified outsider can help employees feel like they have an advocate and be more comfortable asking for what they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Managers, too, suffer from burnout.
